Torrente Uria
The most famous cascades of Sila Mounts are situated along torrent Uria: the Campanaro cascade (the closest to the road, so the most visited),
the Inferno cascade (the most beautiful), the Rupe cascade (the highest but also the most far from the road). In this area people use giving different
names to different part of the same stream: the upper part of Uria is called
Torrente Campanaro while the medium part is called
Torrente Ervavulo. The two parts makes two different canyoning trails
described in this website.
I remember ...Calabria is a land of forests. The word Sila itself comes from the fusion of greek word hyla and latin word silva and both of them mean "forest". But from a couple of centuries the Sila is also the land of woodcutters, and this part of the massif seem to have the highest loggers density. Despite them the forest regenerates itself because of its great vital force. The aggression to the wood seems having found new impulse by biomass electric plants and the financial incentives given by the government to the renewable energy plants. It is clear: forests can renew themselves, and no CO2 is added to the atmosphere by wood burning, but ... the result is replacing the old trees with a bush of young ones. New loggers cartways are dug in the steep landsliding hillsides, down to the hidden valleys where trees can be cut and no one will come checking the permissions. There are loggers carways in the Uria valley too, and many trees are being cut. I think this beautiful valley deserves more respect.
Photographs in this website show ultralight ropes (6 mm ropes made of high tenacity fibers). Read multimedia book Ultralight ropes canyoning technique to learn how to use them.
