canyon exploring with Michele Angileri

Saracena alto

The canyon of Saracena begins before the part explored in 2005. Though the upper canyon is much open and discontinuous, it has the typical erosions and morphology of this creek.
Descending the whole canyon in one day is not advisable: too long and tiring ... Better thinking at the upper part as a stand-alone canyon, less interesting than lower part but still enjoyable!

I remember ...

The tenacious vegetation of these mountains is kept under control by local farmers and shepherds through the use of fire. The frequently start fires to small vegetation spots. Usually fires does not spread out of the spot, however i fear them so much that I don't go into a canyon if there is or there could be a fire in the vicinity. I know how fast a fire can spread in case of wind. Once I was trying to put out a small fire in a meadow of dry grass and shrubs by my home, and the wind made fire jump me so that I suddenly was between two fires ...
And smoke was everywhere and it wasn't funny, no ...

I was there to descend another canyon, but a shepherd (always the same) had lighted a fire to a vegetation spot ...
Damn it, dear shepherd, why don't you cut the bushes instead? you might use them to warm your home ...

So I went to upper Saracena instead.
